Sustainability
Journalism that holds power accountable shouldn't cost the planet more than it has to. Kingfish is built to be light — on your device, on the network, and on the grid.
A lightweight site by design
kingfish.la is a static website: pages are plain HTML served from a cache, with only the small amount of JavaScript a given feature actually needs. There's no heavy framework re-loading on every page, images are lazy-loaded and sized to avoid waste, and we use a short list of typefaces. Fewer bytes and less code mean less energy per visit — and a site that stays fast on older devices and slow connections.
Green hosting
Our site is delivered through Cloudflare, which powers its global network with renewable energy and appears in the Green Web Foundation's directory of green hosts. Serving from a distributed cache also answers your request from a nearby location, cutting the distance — and the energy — your data has to travel.
Less tracking, less data
We run no advertising and no ad-tech trackers. Our analytics are first-party and aggregate — we measure what's useful without cross-site tracking or ad profiles — so we collect and ship far less data than an ad-funded site. Less data moved and stored is less energy spent. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
Transparency: our carbon.txt
We publish a machine-readable carbon.txt — an open
standard that declares the providers behind our site so anyone can inspect our hosting supply
chain and verify its green credentials. It's the same "show your work" principle we apply to
our reporting.
Built to last
Sustainability is also about not disappearing. Our Sustainability Policy covers the organizational side — how we keep Kingfish independent and financially durable, and our binding commitment that the public-record archive we've built survives us. An outlet that endures wastes less than one that has to be rebuilt.
What we don't claim
We're a small newsroom, and we won't greenwash. We don't claim to be "carbon neutral" or to offset our footprint. We focus on what we can actually control — shipping fewer bytes, choosing green infrastructure, and being transparent about it. As we grow, we'll measure more and say more, and this page will change with us.
